Understand, Learn, and Appreciate the Vedas (February 2025)
As we embark on a journey to learn about Sanatan Dharma (the eternal way of life), it is most appropriate to begin with the source of all knowledge: Vedas. The word “ved” is indeed the root of knowledge in Sanskrit. It comes from the Sanskrit verb root “vid” (विद्), which means “to know,” “to learn,” or “to understand”. This root is the foundation for several important concepts in Indian philosophy and Hindu sacred texts. This month’s assignment is to Understand, Learn, and Appreciate the Vedas .
Let’s start with the explanation of the word Veda (वेद):
This term refers to sacred knowledge or scripture in Sanatan Dharma. The Vedas are ancient religious texts considered to be revealed knowledge. (Bonus Question for senior kids: Why are the Vedas considered revealed knowledge?)
Sanatan Dharma is not based on human opinions or temporary ideologies; it is rooted in divine wisdom. The Vedas are considered the oldest and most authentic scriptures that define and shape the principles of Sanatan Dharma. Every major aspect of Hindu philosophy, rituals, and ethics traces back to the Vedas.
Why Should We Learn About the Vedas First?
Before we begin our journey to understand Sanatan Dharma, it is important to first learn about the Vedas. Why? Because the Vedas are the oldest and most sacred scriptures that form the very foundation of Sanatan Dharma. Just like a tree grows strong because of its deep roots, our understanding of Sanatan Dharma becomes clear and meaningful when we first explore the Vedas.
Think of the Vedas as a treasure chest of knowledge. They don’t just talk about prayers and rituals; they include wisdom about science, mathematics, music, health, the universe, and human behavior. Even modern scientists and scholars appreciate the depth of knowledge contained in these ancient texts.
How Many Vedas Are There?
There are four Vedas, each focusing on different aspects of knowledge:
- Rigveda – The Veda of Hymns & Knowledge
- Yajurveda – The Veda of Rituals & Actions
- Samaveda – The Veda of Music & Devotion
- Atharvaveda – The Veda of Everyday Life & Well-being
Each Veda has its own unique purpose, but together, they provide complete guidance on living a righteous and fulfilling life.
What Do the Vedas Capture?
The Vedas are like an ocean of wisdom that cover almost every aspect of life. Here are some key things they teach us:
Why do you think the Vedas are called the “foundation of Sanatan Dharma”?
- Rigveda : Contains beautiful hymns that praise nature, the cosmos, and the divine forces. It teaches us about the power of words and knowledge, and how truth and order govern the universe.
- Yajurveda : Focuses on actions and rituals; explains how people should live in harmony with nature and society; teaches the importance of discipline, duty, and gratitude through the practice of Yajnas (sacrificial rituals).
- Samaveda : The Veda of devotion and melody, reveals how sound and rhythm can elevate both the mind and soul towards the divine. It teaches that music is not just an art but a sacred offering, deepening our connection with the spiritual realm. Many Indian classical music traditions originate from the Samaveda.
- Atharvaveda : A collection of practical knowledge, includes medicine, ethics, social rules, and governance. It even discusses topics like disease prevention, architecture, and daily life solutions!
Why Are the Vedas Still Relevant Today?
Even though the Vedas are thousands of years old, their wisdom is still useful today. For example:
Science & Medicine : The Atharvaveda contains medical knowledge similar to Ayurveda, which is used worldwide for natural healing.
Mathematics : The Vedas mention concepts like the decimal system and large numbers, which are used in modern mathematics.
Yoga & Meditation : The Vedas introduced the world to yoga and meditation, practices that help people stay healthy and happy.
Universal Values : They teach truth, kindness, respect, and harmony, which are needed to create a better world.
Assignment for You!
Now that you have an introduction to the Vedas, let’s reflect and think:
- Why do you think the Vedas are called the “foundation of Sanatan Dharma”?
- Can you find one example of a modern science or practice that is connected to Vedic knowledge?
- If you had to choose one Veda to learn more about, which one would it be and why?
Write your thoughts and answers in your journal. This is just the beginning of our journey to understanding the wisdom of Sanatan Dharma. In the next lessons, we will explore and learn about other Sanatan Scriptures!
Let’s continue our journey with curiosity and appreciation for the incredible wisdom passed down through the Vedas!
