Even right now, you are performing the action of reading this article. Yet our actions often do not give us what we truly aspire for. Instead of clarity, they can leave us with confusion: Why did I do that? What should I do next?

Last month, Chapter 3 taught us that we cannot avoid action. We must act. Chapter 4 takes us one step deeper: action needs the light of wisdom .Without this light, action can become random, reactive, or restless. It is like walking in the dark. We may keep moving, but not know where we are going or what our steps are doing to us.

Chapter 4 gives us that light: understand why we act, learn with humility, offer our actions, and cut through doubt.

Bringing Light Into Action

We cannot simply wait for someone else to turn on the light for us. Chapter 4 shows that one way to bring light into our actions is to become sincerely inquisitive: not argumentative, but genuåçinely eager to understand.

Arjuna shows this. When Krishna says that He taught this yoga in ancient times, Arjuna does not pretend to understand. He asks a direct question (4.4). Later, Krishna teaches åthat wisdom is approached through humility, sincere questioning, and service (4.34).

In the “light of wisdom,” light means the clarity that helps us see before we act. It is not just information or intelligence.

It means asking: What am I doing? Why am I doing it? What is this action doing to me? These questions become a kind of inner lamp.

The Fruit of Clarity

When we make this kind of inquiry a conscious act, it begins to bear fruit. The fruit is the melting away of confusion. This is wisdom .

In Chapter 4, wisdom is not just “I know the answer.” Wisdom is the clarity that changes how we act. I understand my duty more clearly. I understand my motives more honestly. I understand that results are not fully in my hands, so I give my best without becoming trapped by success or failure.

Krishna says even wise people can be confused about action and inaction (4.16). He then teaches that one who sees inaction in action and action in inaction is truly wise (4.18). We must look deeper than the outside of an action.

Two people may do the same thing on the outside, but the inner action may be completely different. Chapter 4 asks us to look at motive, attachment, and awareness. That is where wisdom begins.

A Student Example : Practicing With the Light On

Say you are preparing for a school sports competition.

You show up for practice, run drills, listen to the coach, and try to improve. From outside, it looks like everything is going well. But inside, things may not feel clear.

You are stressed. You compare yourself with others. You are not even sure if you enjoy the sport anymore. You want to do well, but feel trapped by the pressure to win, impress others, or prove something.

So action is happening. But is there light in the action?

What am I doing? I am practicing for a competition. My duty is to train sincerely, follow guidance, support my team, and take care of my body.

Why am I doing it? Am I playing because I love the sport, want to grow, and want to contribute? Or am I acting mainly from fear, comparison, ego, or pressure?

What is this action doing to me? Is practice making me more disciplined, healthy, focused, and joyful? Or more restless, jealous, and afraid?

These questions do not remove the competition. You still have to practice and perform. But now you are not walking in the dark. You may realize, “I care about this sport, but I have become too attached to winning.” Or, “I like being on the team, but I need to stop comparing myself.” Or, “I am doing this only to please others.”

That clarity is the beginning of wisdom. Chapter 4 helps you act with clearer understanding.

Offering and Cutting Confusion

Chapter 4 also teaches that action can become yajna, an offering. Krishna describes discipline, self-control, study, knowledge, and sincere practice as forms of yajna (4.24-4.32). Offering can mean changing our attitude.

Studying can become an offering to learning. Practicing a sport can become an offering to discipline and teamwork.

Krishna says that knowledge-sacrifice is higher than material sacrifice, because all action culminates in knowledge (4.33). The goal is not simply to do more. The goal is to act with more light.

Toward the end of Chapter 4, Krishna gives powerful images for knowledge. Knowledge is like a boat that helps us cross over confusion (4.36), a fire that burns bondage (4.37), and a sword that cuts doubt (4.42).

That is why Chapter 4 ends with a call to action. Krishna tells Arjuna to cut doubt with knowledge, stand in yoga, and arise (4.42).

The chapter begins with wisdom and ends with action. But now action has light.

Reflection Assignment

Write a short article reflecting on one real action from your life: studying for an exam, preparing for a competition, working on a project, helping at home, handling a friendship, or practicing a skill. Use these questions to guide your reflection:

1. What am I doing, and what is my responsibility here?

2. Why am I doing it? Am I acting from care, duty, learning, and truth, or from fear, pressure, ego, comparison, or craving?

3. What is this action doing to me? Is it making me more peaceful, disciplined, honest, and free, or more restless and bound?

4. What is one wise next action I can take?

Use your real experience. Do not write only what sounds correct. Notice where there is confusion, what questions bring light, and how wisdom can change the way you act.

Closing Thought

Chapter 3 taught us that we must act. Chapter 4 teaches us that action needs the light of wisdom. We bring that light by asking sincerely, learning humbly, understanding our motives, offering our actions, and cutting through doubt.

Then action is no longer movement in the dark. It becomes a path to clarity and growth.

Looking forward to your illuminating thoughts!

Regards,

Harsh Mendiratta

www.hawan.net

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 4: Action Needs the Light of Wisdom We all act.
