He was the foremost of modern social reformers. He was born in1774 A.D in Bengal. His remarkable influence was apparent in the field of politics, public administration and education as well as religion. He is most known for his efforts to abolish the practice of sati, a Hindu funeral custom in which the widow sacrifices herself on her husband\u2019s funeral pyre. He supported the remarriage of child widows. Some of his contributions are<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Religious Reformer\n<ul>\n<li>Advocated the worship       of one God.<\/li>\n<li>Published Bengali       translations of Vedas.<\/li>\n<li>Fought against rituals       he deemed meaningless and giving rise to superstitions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Educationist:\n<ul>\n<li>In 1817, he set up       Hindu college at Calcutta.<\/li>\n<li>Supported induction of       western learning into Indian education<\/li>\n<li>He set up a Vedanta College, offering courses as a       synthesis of western and Indian learning.<\/li>\n<li>He was well versed in       many world languages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Social Reformer:\n<ul>\n<li>Demanded property       inheritance rights for woman<\/li>\n<li>Fought against social       evils like \u201csati Pratha\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Due to his efforts,       \u201cSati pratha\u201d was made illegal in 1829.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Journalist:\n<ul>\n<li>Published Journals in       English, Hindi, Persian &amp; Bengali.<\/li>\n<li>His most popular       journal was \u201c Samvad Kaumudi\u201d.
